It was confirmed this week that Tesla already has over 6,000 reservations for its new Model X crossover vehicle.
A member of the Tesla MotorsClub website said he was the 6,117th person to reserve a Model X.
Refundable reservations start at $5,000 for a base Model X, while the Model X Signature vehicle is sold for $40,000.
"From a product standpoint, the Model X is our primary focus, obviously at this point," Tesla CEO Elon Musk said during a press call. "For the most part, our researchers are spending a lot of time personally on the Model X and trying to get the details right. I think there are some things we can do to improve the Model X over the early demonstration prototype that people have seen. I think there is room to make it better."
The Model X can go 160-300 miles on a single charge. Tesla has also confirmed that the Model X can fit around seven adult people inside.
Tesla has not confirmed how many people have reserved the 60 kWh battery pack over the longer range 85 kWh option.
"Based on early customer indications, TSLA believes the Model X could be as popular as the Model S (the SUV derivative of a sedan typically sells approximately half the volume)," Jefferies analyst Elaine Kwei wrote in a research note. "The current production line could be doubled to 80k-100k units."
A prototype version of the new Model X was unveiled on Feb. 9, 2012.
Musk believes that a "limited volume of Model X" vehicles will be delivered in 2014, with most of the vehicles being sent out in 2015.
Three different drivetrain options will be made available: dual motor all-wheel-drive, rear-wheel-drive, and Performance dual motor all-wheel drive.
