Miley Cyrus finally addressed her split with Liam Hemsworth on "The Ellen DeGeneres Show" on Friday, E! reported.
While the couple, who met on the set of "The Last Song," announced the breakup in mid-September, neither had publicly addressed the split yet.
Cyrus, who will turn 21 in November, said it's "not awkward" talking about her breakup "because I'm living it."
She told DeGeneres, "I think people spend more time actually thinking about it than I really do. I just believe when a chapter is done you have to close it and start that new one. That's kind of where I am right now.
"I felt like I have so much to be thankful for at this time that my energy hasn't really been focused on that," she said.
The singer and actress known for her recent MTV VMAs performance released a fourth album, "Bangerz," on Tuesday.
During the "Ellen" interview, Cyrus called the new record a reflection of her relationship with Hemsworth, 23, whom she began dating in 2009 and got engaged to in 2012.
"I think it says that with starting with 'Adore You' and ending with 'Someone Else,'" she said. "I feel like you can really find like this arch of, like, growth."
With lyrics like "You and I were meant to be in holy matrimony," album opener "Adore You" clearly references Cyrus' engagement to Hemsworth, while "Someone Else" begins by mourning a lost relationship and ultimately celebrates becoming a new person.
The eclectic "Bangerz" is Cyrus' most daring effort to date as the former Disney star seeks to distance herself from the "Hannah Montana" role that brought her to fame.
"I want to be really clear and determined with everything I'm doing in my life right now, and I have been," she told DeGeneres. "I keep saying I'm the happiest I've ever been and that's not even a dig. That's just me, because I really am genuinely happy finally with myself, which I think sometimes it takes you separating yourself from someone else to really be happy with who you are."
Hemsworth, who is filming "The Hunger Games: Mockingjay" in Georgia, has not commented publicly on the breakup.
