Tony Stewart on Pace for Daytona 500 Return After Third Leg Surgery

Tony Stewart had a third surgery on his injured right leg on Oct. 7, Stewart-Haas Racing confirmed in a statement.

The procedure was called a "proactive measure" to observe and close a wound on his shin. Stewart is still recovering from a fractured tibia and fibula he sustained in an August during a sprint car crash in Iowa.

Stewart had a streak of 521 consecutive races going before the injury. He was third among all active drivers in consecutive races started.

Two previous surgeries in Aug. stabilized the NASCAR veteran's leg with a metal rod. He started rehab for the injury at the end of Sept.

Stewart will remain hospitalized for observation for most of the week.

Stewart was driving a winged 360 c.i. sprinter in Oskaloose with the American Sprint Car Series and was leading the pack when a lapped car "spun in front of him" according to USA Today.

Stewart hit the lapped vehicle and his car flipped.

Despite the third surgery, Stewart is on track to return by next season's Daytona 500.
