Tesla Talking With Samsung SDI About Battery Supply Deal

Tesla Motors is working on a deal with Samsung SDI Co Ltd to make the South Korean company an additional battery supplier.

The California automaker is trying to add more vehicles and expand around the world, and though the deal as being far from done, both companies are happy with the progress they've made so far.

Samsung SDI is a unit of Samsung Electronics Co Ltd according to Reuters.

"Nothing has been decided," said Kim Sang-eun, a Seoul-based spokesman for Samsung SDI.

No financial details have been provided as of press time.

Samsung SDI will reportedly provide battery technology for the Model X, a cheaper vehicle the electric car maker is expected to make available by 2014.

Sources close to Samsung SDI said the deal is 90 percent compete.

Tesla's spokeswoman Liz Jarvis-Shean also confirmed the two firms were talking but said that Tesla was also in talks with other companies as well.

"We continually evaluate best (battery) cells and technologies from all manufacturers," Jarvis-Shean said, according to Reuters.

Tesla and Samsung SDI have already finishing testing Samsung SDI's battery technology.
