September auto sales may drop after a 27-month streak of year-over-year gains which dates back to 2011.

Projected sales will fall 23.8 percent from Aug. 2013 and a 3.7 percent decrease from Sept. 2012 according to Edmunds.

Automakers Hyundai/Kia and Volkswagen/Audi are expected to report the biggest drop off in sales for this past month.

"It looks like sales took a big hit in September, but the monthly SAAR (Seasonally Adjusted Annual Rate) is up year over year, and the industry is still selling more cars per day than it did last year," said Jessica Caldwell, an Edmunds senior analyst. "Many of the fundamentals that have driven strong car sales over the last year are still in place, and we can expect them to contribute to a solid final quarter to close out 2013."

Edmunds claims the decline is due to how sales were recorded in 2012 versus 2013.

Labor Day weekend sales were added into Sept. 2012 sales, but they were counted towards Aug. in 2013.

Another reason sales are low this month is because Sept. 2013 has just 23 selling days, were as Aug. 2013 had 28 and Sept. 2012 had 25.

Ford and Chrysler are projected to report sales gains despite the overall down month for the auto industry.

Ford is predicted to see a 5 percent sales increase during Sept., while Chrysler is projected to see a sales increase of 0.7 percent, according to Edmunds.
