General Motors CEO Dan Akerson has announced to the world that Cadillac will take on electric car maker Tesla Motors for EV supremacy.
Akerson said to The Detroit News that GM has a plan "to compete head-to-head" with Elon Musk's company, which is known for its signature EV, the Model S sedan.
The Detroit automaker has set up a "small team" to study and analyze Tesla according to the newspaper.
"We'll sell more Volts and lose less money on the Volts than they'll lose on the Model S," Akerson said, according to The Detroit News.
Akerson also said Tesla's recent success doesn't mean it will last very long. He cited Fisker as an example, saying "Does anybody even remember Fisker? I mean, there were a number of them; they are all gone."
The 2014 Volt is sold for $34,995, including shipping, while the Model S is sold for a base price of $71,070.
GM's VP for global product programs, Doug Parks, said last week that the automaker is working on a $30,000 electric vehicle with a 200-mile range.
Akerson added that he is still not convinced pure EVs are the "panacea" that the U.S. wants, but feels that could all change quickly.
Musk meanwhile has avoided all smack talk so far, and even said he was happy to hear about GM's big announcement recently on Twitter.
