BMW Recall: M5, 5 Series Vehicles Called Back Over Taillight Issue

BMW is recalling approximately 134,100 vehicles fix a taillight problem, according to a report by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Vehicles listed in the recall includes: the BMW 528i, 535i, 550i, and M5.

The recall is expected to begin sometime in October.

"Over time, increased resistance at the taillight electrical contact points may cause damage to the ground terminal and housing of the connector, resulting in an intermittent or permanent loss of functionality of one or more rear lamp functions (tail, brake, turn-signal, reverse)," said NHTSA in its summary of the problem.

BMW said to safety regulators it is not aware of any accidents or injuries related to the issue.

The vehicles affected by the recall were made March 1, 2007 through December 31, 2009.

"Intermittent light operation reduces the ability to warn other motorists of the driver's intentions, increasing the risk of a crash," the NHTSA said.

BMW dealers will replace the rear lamp bulb carriers, free of charge. If you think your vehicle is suffering from the issue, don't hesitate to bring it to your local dealer before the recall begins.
