The 2014 BMW i8 will be sold for $136,625, including a $925 destination fee, when the vehicle goes on sale during the spring of 2014.
The German automaker called its i8, which debuted this week at the 2013 Frankfurt Auto Show, "a new generation of sports car."
Many experts felt that the new BMW would be a 2015 model, but a company spokesman confirmed it would be released for the 2014 model year.
The i8 will be the first plug-in hybrid released by BMW.
EPA estimates have not been published as of press time, but the automaker feels that the BMW should return 94 mpg in the U.S, but failed to say if the number is for in city driving or highway driving.
Don't expect official EPA estimates for the i8 until after the new year.
BMW says the i8 can be charged at a BMW I Charging Station which takes 1.5 hours, and a standard 110-volt outlet which takes 3.5 hours.
The vehicle is equipped to a 1.5-liter three-cylinder gasoline engine, a lithium-ion battery, and an electric motor.
The vehicle's output is 362 hp, and is the first BMW hybrid which the gas engine and the electric motor are used to operate different drive wheels, according to BMW.
BMW claims the vehicle can go 0-62 mph in just 4.4 seconds, and has a top speed of 75 mph.
There are five different driving models, including a Sport mode with an "ultra-intense boost function provided by the electric motor" and Eco Pro mode, that allows the driver to program functions like air conditioning.
Company spokesman David Buchko said the plug-in hybrid will be able to compete with any other high-performance vehicle with a similar price, like the Lexus LFA.
