James Bond Submarine Car Sells for $864,000, Less Than Expected

A "submarine car" used in the James Bond movie "The Spy Who Loved Me" sold for 550,000 pounds, or $864,600, at auction on Monday.

The final total was well less than had been expected, according to Reuters.

The white Lotus Esprit, which turned into a submarine during a scene in the 1977 film, had been expected to sell between 650,000 and 950,000 pounds, according to RM Auctions.

"We have a great track record in selling incredible and iconic movie cars, and this particular Lotus is certainly up there amongst the most famous cars of all time," RM Managing Director Max Girardo said in a statement, according to Reuters.

The fully operational submarine car was among a number of contents in a storage unit in Long Island, NY, which was purchased by a couple during a blind auction in 1989.

Six different Esprint cars were used for filming, but only one was turned into a submarine car, according to RM Auctions.

Bidding started at 100,000 pounds at auction, which was broadcasted live online.

The auction house previously sold an Aston Martin D85 used by Sean Connery in "Goldfinger" and "Thunderball" for 2.9 million pounds in 2010, according to Reuters.
