Toyota has revealed that a new Prius and the company's first hydrogen fuel cell car will be released by 2015.
The new Prius will get "significantly better fuel economy" than its 50 mpg predecessor according to Satoshi Ogiso, a Toyota engineer who helped develop the first Prius over 20 years ago, according to the Associated Press.
Ogiso added that the Prius will have a new battery, and advanced motor and gas engine combination that is smaller, cheaper, and lighter than the current engine.
The vehicle's fuel economy has not been released, but Ogiso is hoping the Prius at least gets 55 mpg in combined city and highway driving.
"The challenge to continue to improve at this rate, to beat your own record, becomes very difficult but makes it all the more motivating," Ogiso said during a media event near Detroit, according to the Associated Press. "I can tell you that we are very motivated to beat our record."
Toyota is hoping the new Prius helps the company sell over 5 million hybrids in the U.S. by 2016.
Last month the automaker sold 2 million Lexus and Toyota models, including 1.4 million Prius compact, Prius C subcompacts, and Prius V wagons, according to the Associated Press.
"Arguably, Prius is more than a car. It's become a pop culture icon," Bob Carter, Toyota's senior vice president of automotive operations in the U.S., said according to the Associated Press.
Carter also confirmed that the automaker is planning on introducing other technologies, like more electric cars, hybrids, and a hydrogen fuel cell vehicle.
The hydrogen fuel cell model will be released sometime in early 2014. The only current hydrogen fuel cell vehicle available to the public in the U.S. is the Honda FCX Clarity.
"You can take any fuel efficient technology and extend the range and make it even more efficient with a hybrid," he said.
