2014 Detroit Electric SP:01 Officially Delayed in The U.S.

Detroit Electric confirmed on Aug. 29 that it will delay U.S. production of the 2014 Detroit Electric SP:01, a $135,000 electric sports vehicle.

Production overseas will start during the fourth quarter in an existing plant located in Holland.

The company has received over 60 orders for the electric sports car from customers in Asian and Europe, according to Edmunds.

Detroit Electric said it is working to get a Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard certification for the SP:01 so that it can continue production and sales in the U.S.

It is not currently known when operations will begin again in the U.S.

Back in March, the company said it planned to start manufacturing the SP:01 at a production plant in Southeast Michigan by August 2013. This changed last week however as it was reported that the company still hadn't finalized an agreement for the plan, which caused the delay.

Despite the delay, Detroit Electric CEO Albert Lam still wants his company's to produce vehicles in Michigan.

"We are Detroit Electric, not London Electric," said Lam, according to Edmunds. "Our commitment to the City of Detroit, the State of Michigan and the United States is as strong as it ever was."
