GM to Provide Wireless Charging for Smartphones in 2014 Vehicles

General Motors will offer wireless charging for smartphones in select vehicles starting next year according to Ran Poliakine, CEO of Powermat Technologies.

Owners of the capable vehicles, which have yet to be announced, will be able to charge phones through a Powermat surface inside the vehicle.

"We continue to work with Powermat to bring their technologies to GM products, but for competitive reasons we're not discussing specifics at this time. The technology continues to move forward," said GM spokesman Dan Flores in a press statement.

Global shipments of wirelessly charging devices are expected to increase from 5 million units to 100 million by 2015 according to Bloomberg Businessweek.

GM didn't specify which phones will or won't be able to charge in the vehicles, but the devices must be able to recharge though built-in technology.

"The car is a major part of life for everyone with a smartphone," Poliakine said in a press statement. "And this is taking care of that part of life."

Poliakine said that GM will become the first automaker to use Powermat technology in a vehicle.

Rival companies Toyota Motors and Chrysler both offer wireless charging according to Bloomberg.

GM bought a $5 million stake in Powermat back in 2011.
