Toyota has released another image of the Toyota Hybrid-R Concept this week ahead of its scheduled debut at the 2013 Frankfurt Auto Show.
The newest photo puts an end to rumors that the new car would be a successor to the Toyota Supra, but the automaker said this week it would "be based on a current Toyota production model."
The Supra is currently out of production, but it's still one of the most popular models.
The Hybrid-R is equipped with a powertrain that uses similar technology used by Toyota Racing's Hybrid racer in the FIA World Endurance Championship according to Edmunds.
BMW and Toyota revealed plans earlier this year to make a joint sports-vehicle, which is expected to be finished by the end of 2013.
The two companies will also work on a new fuel cell vehicle system, which could include a hydrogen tank and motor according to a joint press release.
The companies expect to release the hydrogen tank motor by 2020.
"In order for FCVs (fuel cell vehicles) to become more widely used, it needs to be cheaper. That would require a great deal of time and cost for development," said Toyota Vice Chairman Takeshi Uchiyamada, who led development of the bestselling Prius hybrid in the late 1990s to Reuters.
Toyota uses lithium-ion batteries in its Prius plug-in hybrid currently, and also in select Prius v models.
The concept will be revealed on Sept. 10 at the Frankfurt Auto Show.
