Tony Stewart Crash Update: Second Surgery Could Keep Sprint Cup Winner Out a Month (VIDEO)

Tony Stewart will be out "indefinitely" after having a second surgery on his broken right leg according to a press statement released by Stewart-Haas Racing.

Stewart broke his tibia and fibula after colliding with a lapped car during a sprint car race on Aug. 5 in Iowa.

The former Sprint Cup champion had a preliminary procedure to clean the injury and stabilize it on Aug. 6. He was then transferred to North Carolina where a metal rod was placed inside his tibia according to USA Todaytony s.

Stewart-Haas racing isn't sure how many Stewart will miss, but it could be 3-4 weeks before he gets inside another racecar.

Max Papis will replace Stewart this weekend at Watkins Glen International. Stewart-Haas racing has yet to announce a replacement driver for Aug. 18 at Michigan International Speedway.

This weekend's race will be the first Sprint Cup race without Stewart since 1999 according to USA Today.

Stewart had a streak of 521 consecutive races going before the injury. He was third among all active drivers in consecutive races started.

The 42-year-old driver has been involved in three crashes since July alone. He was in 11th place in the NASCAR standings with only 1 victory this season so far.
