Flying Car Makes First Public Flight, Watch The Terrafugia Transition Here (VIDEO)

At the EAA AirVentures air show this week, Terrafugia's Transition flying car dazzled a crowd during its first public flight ever.

The vehicle is capable of taking off in just a matter of minutes and also acts as a street legal car according to Terrafugia.com. The company is hoping its $279,000 experiment brings American roads and skies together with one machine by 2015.

The Transition is making a number of test flights at the Oshkosh, Wisconsin show this week to demonstrate how easily the vehicle can switch from being a car to a plane.

"It handles really well, especially considering it's an airplane. It's fun to drive!" said Andrew Heafitz, vice president of engineering for Terrafugia to The Wall-Street Journal.

The vehicle has folded wings, control surfaces, and a small propeller that allows it to fly like any other light aircraft that currently exists according to the report.

Once the wings are folded in, the vehicle can be driven on the road. The vehicle's braking system is mainly due to its light weight frame, small wheels, and four-wheel disc brakes.

Terrafugia expects the vehicle will be flown 85 percent of the time, and driven 15 percent of the time according to CNet.com.

The Transition weighs less than 1,000 pounds without gasoline, and the vehicle's approximate takeoff weight is 1,430 according to Yahoo.
