Andrea Antonelli Killed in Motorcycle Race Crash at Moscow Raceway (VIDEO)

Italian racer Andrea Antonelli died after a crash on the opening lap of a World Supersport Championship race at the Moscow Raceway on July 21.

Antonelli suffered a head injury when he fell off his Kawasaki motorcycle going 155 mph in torrential rain and then was hit by another racer according to Reuters.

Officials called off the race and the headlining World Superbike Championship event following the incident.

"The race was stopped with the red flag and the rider was immediately taken to an ambulance where the medical staff worked to resuscitate him. Despite their efforts, Andrea sadly succumbed to his injuries at 2.10pm local time. Everyone involved in motorcycle championships extends its deepest condolences to Andrea's family, friends, team and the Italian Federation at this tragic loss," said a statement on worldsbk.com.

Russia's federal investigative committee said it's going to look into the crash according to Russian Itar-Tass news agency.

The 25-year-old died shortly after being taken to a race medical center.

Antonelli is the second person to die during a competition after World Superbike rider Marco Simoncelli was killed during the 2011 Malaysian Gran Prix according to The Daily Mail.

"He has gone to keep Marco Simoncelli company. We tried to revive Andrea immediately, but there was absolutely nothing we could do," said Dr. Massimo Corbascio according to The Daily Mail. "In these cases, even if you incubate someone and take them to the intensive care unit - he remains a body attached to a machine with no brain, there's just blood in the brain."

Antonelli raced for team Go Eleven of Italy.
