Chrysler's redesigned Ram 1500 has been named the top full-sized pickup truck by Consumer Reports for the first time ever. 

The 2013 Ram was listed higher than the Ford F-150, currently the top-selling vehicle in the U.S., and the Toyota Tundra.

Consumer Reports did say testing is not complete however as it still hasn't finished testing General Motors redesigned 2014 Chevrolet Silverado.

The magazine expects the GM truck to come close to the 1500. Those results will be posted by the end of the summer.

The 2013 Ram scored 78 out of 100 points on Consumer Reports road test, beating the Tundra, which scored a 69 and the F-150, which scored a 68.

"The Ram 1500 is surprisingly luxurious and refined, but still fully capable of doing hard work when needed," said Jake Fisher, the head of automotive testing at Consumer Reports, in a press statement. "Continued interior and powertrain improvements make the Ram a particularly well-rounded choice."

The pickup truck segment is pretty competitive among U.S. automakers, because it is "so lucrative" according to Reuters.

Large pickups usually generate profits of around $12,000 or more per model in an improving economy, and sales have increased nearly every month.

Full-size pickup truck sales are up 22 percent in the U.S. through the first half of 2013, and June was the best sales month for trucks since 2007.

Chrysler is majority owned by Italy's Fiat.
