Honda Fit Recalled for The Second Time, 686,000 Units Could Cause a Fire

Honda said this weekend that it will recall approximately 686,000 vehicles worldwide for a second time because the first time it tried to fix an electrical problem that could cause the vehicle to catch fire didn't work.

Of the vehicles being recalled, 143,000 2007-08 Fit models were sold in the U.S. according to Honda spokesman Chris Martin.

In other locations around the world 2002-08 Fit and City models are affected according to Martin. The smaller City vehicle is not sold in the U.S.

The issue with the vehicles is that a master electrical switch in the driver's door could malfunction and cause a fire. If the switch becomes wet a fire could break out according to Honda who confirmed the news with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration back in 2010.

Honda recalled the vehicles once before, choosing to put a case around the electrical switch. Recent testing concluded that tape used on the case could bunch up and allow leaks according to Martin.

Honda has recommended that people park their vehicles inside for now until a Honda dealer can properly inspect the vehicle. A fire could occur even if the engine is shut off according to Martin.

There has been one confirmed death due to the issue in South Africa back in 2010.

Honda is aware of seven short-circuited switches in Fit vehicles in the U.S. Five of those incidents have resulted in a melted switch, two of those circumstances have caused a fire in the door.

Since 2010 however Honda has not been told of any switches melting according to Martin.
