Mitsubishi Recall: Over 3,000 Outlander Sport SUVs in U.S. and Puerto Rico Contain Faulty Roofs

Mitsubishi Motors is recalling approximately 3,181 Outlander Sport SUVs in the United States and Puerto Rico because the panoramic glass roof could detach.

The defect could occur because the roof may have been installed without primer being applied before the adhesive, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The lack of primer could result in reduced adhesion according to Reuters. The affected vehicles are from the 2011 model year.

Approximately 2,802 vehicles are affected by the recall in the U.S., and 379 vehicles were sold in Puerto Rico according to NHTSA documents.

Back in March 2011, Mitsubishi received a complaint from a customer outside the U.S. that the glass roof detached. Mitsubishi reportedly changed the equipment used during the manufacturing process, but "none of those vehicles were sent to the United States" according to Reuters.

Mitsubishi received another complaint earlier this year over a vehicle built outside the affected period it had studied, according to NHTSA documents.

The second complaint led the company to conduct a recall in countries like Japan and other locations, including the United States.

No complaints about the issue have been made in the U.S.

Mitsubishi mechanics will inspect the glass roof to determine if the primer was applied. If the primer wasn't applied, it will be removed and properly reinstalled at no cost.
