GM Expands SUV Recall to Over 480,000 For Fire Risk

General Motors Co is recalling approximately 231,000 SUVs that might be in danger of an electrical short that could potentially cause a fire.

The decision is an expansion of a previous recall from August 2012 when 249,000 SUVs were recalled for a short in a circuit board in the driver's door that could lead to a fire according to Reuters.

Vehicles involved in both recalls include: the 2006 Chevrolet Trailblazer EXT and GMC Envoy XL and 2006-2007 Chevrolet Trailblazer, GMC Envoy, Buick Rainier, Saab 9-7X and Isuzu Ascender.

Of the approximate 480,000 recalled SUVs, 443,000 were sold in the United States GM said in a press statement this week.

The automaker said it has received 58 reports of vehicle fires so far, and 11 minor injuries occurred because of the issue.

Most of the injuries took place while the driver was operating a vehicle from the original recall according to Reuters.

Government safety investigators said that a fire could take place "even while the vehicle is not in use."

"As a precaution, owners are advised to park outside until the remedy has been made," the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said according to Reuters.

The issue involves a possible fluid leak in the driver's door module, which the NHTSA said could cause corrosion that might result in a short in the circuit board.

The short could result in overheating, which could "melt components of the door module, producing odor, smoke or a fire," according to the NHTSA.

GM will begin sending letters out in the mail this summer to owners of the recalled vehicles. If you receive a letter, take your vehicle to your nearest GM dealership to have the issue fixed.

The automotive company warned drivers to not to use one of the recalled models until letters are sent out officially.

Dealers will repair the issue free of charge according to GM.
