Ford Motor Company has recalled certain models of the Mustang over concerns that the backup camera wiring in those vehicles may be loose or damaged. That would lead to a blank or distorted image when the car is reversing, a scenario that could lead to a crash as Ford Mustang drivers may not see people or obstacles behind their vehicles.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration announced the recall on Monday, February 21, affecting 330,784 Ford Mustangs produced between 2015 and 2017. There are two problems associated with this massive Ford Mustang recall.
One issue is that a camera installed between May 2014 through February 2015 has improper soldering on its circuit board. The other issue is that a wiring harness used from February 2014 into October 2017 could be damaged by opening and closing the trunk.
The root cause of the problem is the wiring harness found within the decklid, located between the taillights of the Ford Mustang. The NHTSA said in its recall notice that "a loss of electrical conductivity caused by a damaged decklid harness and/or an insufficiently soldered header connector internal to the camera can lead to a loss of rearview image."
Ford first discovered the camera wiring problems through elevated repair rates. Documents from the NHTSA reveal that at least 8,500 related warranty claims were filed with the automaker in connection with this issue. Ford traced this particular problem to a production change made by a supplier.
Fortunately for affected Ford Mustang owners, the fix for this problem is pretty simple. Ford will address the issue by replacing the decklid harness or the rearview camera. Like the previous recalls issued by the NHTSA, this will be performed free of charge, with Ford notifying owners by mail starting on March 7, 2022.
The NHTSA noted that second letters would be sent once the remedy for this problem is available. Owners affected by this recall may contact Ford's customer service hotline at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's assigned number for this recall is 22S06, while NHTSA's recall ID is 22V082000.

Owners can get their free Mustang fix at their local Ford or Lincoln dealership. The automaker will also reimburse owners who previously paid for a repair related to this issue. According to Ford, there have been two reports of minor crashes in relation to this problem. The good news is there are no reports of injury connected to this issue.
At least 100 percent of the model-year Ford Mustang vehicles from 2015 through 2017 are affected by this issue. These Mustangs have the recalled wiring harness, which went into production on February 22, 2014, and taken out on October 2, 2017. They also have the affected cameras, which Ford used from May 12, 2014 to February 28, 2015.
