One of Sydney Pollack's former prized possessions is going up for auction, with the pristine 1971 Ferrari 365 GTS/4 Daytona set to be sold at RM Sotheby's. The vintage four-wheeler was the 31st of 121 GTS/4 Daytona Spiders produced by Scaglietti. The Spider had a short three-year production run between 1971 and 1973, making this vehicle such a rare commodity.
This vehicle is even rarer because it is only one of just 14 models to feature an Argento Metallizzato bodywork. The Daytona Spider that is up for sale has an Argento Metallizzato paint finish over a Nero interior, giving the Ferrari a different look from its customary Rosso red.
The Prancing Horse's cutting-edge 365 GTS features an open-top cabin and a water-cooled, front-facing V12 engine. The two-seater convertible houses a five-speed manual transmission that revs up to 259-kW at 7500-rpm with a maximum twist of 431 N⋅m.
The grand tourer was first purchased by H.J. Hoff, a Ferrari enthusiast, in 1972. Hoff had the car in his possession for just three years as he sold the model to legendary Hollywood filmmaker Sydney Pollack in 1975. Pollack, an acclaimed director, producer, and actor, held onto the Spider for a couple of years while he was at the peak of his career in showbiz.
Pollack, whose Hollywood career spanned some 50 years, later sold the Ferrari to Alberto Amezcua of Mexico City in 1979. Amezcua's ownership of the vehicle did not last long, though, as he was strong-armed into selling the Ferrari to a local pawn shop owner loosely connected to the Mexican president José López Portillo.

Amezcua regained possession of the Daytona after the model resurfaced in the United States in 1983. He kept the car for another decade, with the 1971 Ferrari 365 GTS/4 Daytona even appearing in the 1993 FCA Vintage Ferrari Concours d'Elegance at the Quail Lodge and the 1996 Vintage Ferrari Concours d'Elegance, which was held in concert with the Concorso Italiano.
The Daytona changed hands a few more times before ending up in 1999 with a caring auto collector named Ron Bridges from Longwood, Florida. That person commissioned Vantage Motor Works to do a show-quality restoration of the Ferrari. The Daytona remains in mint condition at present, with the convertible sporting its original paint scheme and only having a mere 40,150 miles on the odometer.
As for the price of this rare car, the Ferrari went under the hammer at RM Sotheby's Arizona auction last weekend, with the set amount ranging from $2.4 million to $2.8 million USD. The car failed to land a winning bid in that auction, though, so prospective buyers still have an opportunity to acquire this very rare Ferrari.
