Remember all those Robo AI cars in the movies? Guess what they are here now, in a less intelligent form though. Waymo is what the service is called, and it is already rolled out for testing. Their autonomous cars are equipped with an expensive Lidar module that connects via 2VX or IoT via connected networks.
Nothing is charged so far, but there are plans to charge riders later on. An indication that Waymo is getting close to finally profiting from its AI drive taxi service. Other companies like Optimus Ride and startups are planning to cash in once its service proves commercially profitable. Or the technology improves with 5G and 2VX that will improve these services.
Here are some updates about Waymo's services.
Arizona clocks 10 million miles of road travelled by L4 self-drive car.
Recently, during October 2018 in which their autonomous cars travelled 10 million miles on public roads. Phoenix Arizona residents had access to the self-driving service without charge.
Testing the ride service in Phoenix would include a safety driver present at all times. Waymo stresses as the drivers act as oversight as a safety precaution. This shows that Waymo has achieved level 4 driving autonomy.
Vehicles, as Waymo operates, are considered a level 4 autonomous car that does not need a licensed driver. Since the car will navigate with greater precision than a human driver. Self-driving is not applicable if a licensed rider is needed! These were remarked by the Waymo CEO.
Even with confidence in Lidar equipped automated cars that are connected. Only a few testers as riders should be few, or a hundred or so. Thorough testing to ensure that the tech will work flawlessly.
Till the go signal for full-scale implementation and public use. Rides will be limited to a small number. Safety drivers will still supervise rides as additional safety measures. Waymo's services can speed up the car-less agency with the tech fully operational.
Driverless rides are coming soon without the backup driver.
Waymo announced that in Phoenix Arizona in an e-mail notifying riders that fully autonomous cars are coming sooner. This was not expected, and it was an important benchmark for the ride app. Backup drivers are stationed in the driverless car, they are not as the email stated.
Lucky ones are the first riders who signed up for Waymo autonomous car services. More information was given about the program. By clicking what to expect in the app, they will get all the info regarding the driverless program.
Whether the driverless program is declinable or a backup, the safety driver is an option is not known. Expect to be watched by cameras inside the vehicle. A help button is an option on the app, if the rider needs help.
When the bugs are ironed out with the tech improved. Waymo's rideshare using autonomous cars will be all over the US, not only in Phoenix. Driverless taxis are coming, and Waymo is paving the way!
