The 2018 BMW X4 has been spotted recently under heavy wraps. However, several design tweaks can be observed under the disguise. Moreover, the new model is speculated to have lighter weight.

The successor of BMW X3 has been spotted while testing on the busy road. Unfortunately, the new model wore a full camouflage so there are not many details to cue from the mule.

Spy photos reveal a smoother look of the new mid-sized coupe SUV. The prominent curves going down the side of the existing model seem to have been minimized.

At the front, the latest kidney grilles can be spotted alongside the new headlights. From the back, the brand's logo can be seen in the middle of the new tailgate. In addition, the license plate is now placed lower on the rear bumper.

Under the hood, the spy photos could not give any hint. However, reports predict that the new X4 will share the new chassis that BMW is working on for the next generation X3, which is a lighter platform. This new chassis is a lightweight rear-wheel drive platform that is 100kg less than the one utilized on the existing model. Although lighter, the new platform has increased the length to provide better legroom for the passengers.

Furthermore, speculations also point to the possibility of a plug-in hybrid variant of the new X4. The theory stemmed from the speculated lightweight rear-wheel-drive platform of the new coupe SUV. This variant will probably run with a 2.0-liter four-cylinder petrol and electric motor setup that can deliver249bhp and around 30 miles of range.

Aside from the speculated plug-in hybrid option, BMW might release two other variants. A 2.0-liter four-cylinder diesel engine variant or s sporty, M-division variant as well.

The next generation BMW X3 is yet to be announced and rumors predict a September release at this year's Frankfurt Motor Show. Following this launch, the new BMW X4 is predicted to come out early next year, possibly at a motor show in Geneva or Detroit.
