SUVs Flunk Test: Five Small Vehicles Fail IIHS Test, Only Subaru, Mitsubishi Pass (VIDEO)

Five SUV vehicles failed the new Insurance Institute for Highway Safety small overlap crash test according to USA Today.

The 2014 Subaru Forester was the only one of 13 small crossovers to earn an overall rating of "Good" in the test. The 2013 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport received an "Acceptable" rating according to the IIHS.

IIHS testers said that Subaru seemed to be the only manufacturer that "set out" to pass the test.

"With the redesigned Forester, Subaru's engineers set out to do well in our new test, and they succeeded," Joe Nolan, the institute's vice president for vehicle research, said in a press statement. "This is exactly how we hoped manufacturers would respond to improve protection for people in these kinds of serious frontal crashes."

Vehicles that received a marginal rating were the: Honda CR-V, Jeep Wrangler, Mazda CX-5, Nissan Rogue, and the Volkswagen Tiguan.

The five small crossovers that received a poor rating included: the Buick Encore, Ford Escape, Hyundai Tucson, Jeep Patriot, and the Kia Sportage.

The new overlap test was designed to replicate what happens when a vehicle hits a pole or narrow thing objects at the left or right edge of the vehicle.

The IIHS didn't comment on how badly each one of these vehicle's did, but did say the Jeep Patriot was one of the worst vehicle's regarding restraints and kinematics.

"The dummy's head slid off the frontal airbag as the steering wheel moved 8 inches up and nearly 6 inches to the right," the IIHS said about the Patriot according to USA Today. "The side curtain airbag didn't deploy, and the safety belt allowed the dummy's head and torso to move too far forward."

In 2012, deaths on U.S. roads increased for the first time since 2005, rising 5.3 percent to 34,080, according to the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
