An unnamed Rolls-Royce client paid for what's likely the most expensive car sold that isn't from an auction. This man reportedly shelled out nearly $13 million for a bespoke Rolls-Royce Sweptail that he commissioned from the company.
Rolls-Royce has a special department for such client requests. Its team has been customizing the luxury vehicle for their wealthy client since 2013, according to The Drive.
The company showed off the car at the Villa d'Este Concorso d'Eleganza event over the weekend. The company's team took inspirations from its classic release from the 1920s through the 1930s to create the one-off automobile with some modern-era features.
The Rolls Royce Sweptail has a 1925 Phantom I Round Door sides, a 1934 Phantom II Streamline Saloon rear, a 1934 Gurney Nutting Phantom II Two Door Light Saloon and a 1934 Park Ward 20/25 Limousine Coupé coachwork, according to Jalopnik. It was hand-polished to perfection and a panoramic glass roof completed the whole assembly to become "one of the most complex ever seen on a motor car," as per Top Gear.
Rolls Royce described the owner as a "connoisseur and collector of distinctive, one-off items including super-yachts and private aircraft." The company's CEO Torsten Müller-Ötvös told Car Magazine they agreed to customize his request because he was "sustainable enough, understandable enough that this might need detours."
Inside, the car is fitted with and open-pore Paldao in Macassar Ebony as well as moccasin and dark spice leather seats and dashboard. A special attaché case sits in its panniers where the owner can place or store his laptop. The luxury car has a special registered number, 08, which was customized with ingots and also hand-polished.
"Sweptail is a truly magnificent car," Müller-Ötvös said, as per its press release. "It exudes the romance of travel for its own sake, and immediately places 'Sweptail' in the pantheon of the world's great intercontinental tourers." Take a look at it in the video below.
