Nintendo's highly popular "Legend of Zelda" video game series is coming to the smartphones. Sources disclose that the company plans on bringing the game shortly after the release of "Animal Crossing" in the mobile platform later this year.

Should plans become firm, "Legend of Zelda" would be the company's fifth mobile game. Nintendo earlier announced it planned on releasing at least five smartphone games by March 2017. So far, only three made it past its deadline — "Miitomo," "Super Mario Run" and "Fire Emblem Heroes," according to Mac Rumors.

Nintendo has big plans for expanding its mobile gaming line-up, as per The Wall Street Journal. As of March 2017, the company already posted earnings of $176.4 million just for its current mobile games in the market. Particular details of the "Legend of Zelda" release on the smartphone are still scarce, but gaming experts already have some ideas on what fans can expect based on Nintendo's existing mobile offerings.

"Legend of Zelda" on the smartphone will likely have a connection to its latest installment, "Breath of Wild," which Nintendo released last March for Switch and Wii U users. Nintendo will likely keep its momentum going, hence it would make sense to tie "Breath of Wild" for smartphone gaming, according to Tom's Guide.

If it were to follow "Super Mario Run" then "Zelda" would be done in 2D and offer dungeon quests. If it were to follow "Fire Emblem Heroes," then "Zelda" would entail character collection of the games' heroes and villains.

"Legend of Zelda" could also offer new shrines to complete per day similar to the ones in "Breathe of Wild," Mic noted. The game could also make use of the smartphone's accelerometers for its motion-based controls.

Speculations aside, Nintendo, as always, remains mum on their plans for the "Legend of Zelda" smartphone game. Its mobile partner and developer DeNA has also not commented on the latest reports, Kotaku reported.
