Microsoft Co. has sold approximately 100 million Windows 8 licenses in the six months since launch, putting it in line with its predecessor according to Reuters.
The company is aware that a lot of people have been disappointed with the operating system, and announced a strategy they feel will please those critics.
"Is it perfect? No. Are there things we need to change? Absolutely. We are being very real about what needs to change and changing it as thoughtfully and quickly as we can", said Tami Reller, co-head of Microsoft's Windows unit at the company's Redmond, Washington headquarters last week.
Windows 8 is the first Microsoft OS designed just for touch commands, but it has failed to compete with other tablets designed by Apple and Samsung according to Reuters.
Microsoft revealed they'll be releasing an update to Windows 8, previously called by the code-name "Windows Blue," by the end of this year according to Reller. More details on the update will be released by the end of May.
While Microsoft has sold over 100 million Windows 8 licenses since being released on October 26, matching Windows 8 sales three years ago, the company doesn't think it will match its predecessors yearly sales total of 240 million according to Reuters.
"When we set out to build Windows 8 we set ourselves up for a mobile computing change. All the changes were necessary to make that forward progress, adding the store, building out the store, adding apps and touch and an entire new user experience," Reller, said according to ABC News. "It was a great foundation and there is a lot to build on."
Sales for Windows 8 was helped by the fact that it replaced the unpopular Windows Vista, but many customers have been put off by the new-look OS that doesn't have a start button.
Reller has not said if the new update will feature the return of the start button and other missing features that users have missed. The company has tried to pay more attention to helping customers adapt.
"We've considered a lot of different scenarios to help traditional PC users move forward as well as making usability that much better on all devices," Reller said according to Reuters.
