Ferrari 488 GTB seems to have a successor as a new model was spotted while on its early test drive. The new sport car appears to be getting a new powertrain and some technology enhancements.
The next-generation Ferrari 488 GTB seems to have made its discrete debut. The mule spotted on the road was wearing some camouflage which hints on some refreshes.
Looking at the spotted mule, it appears that a new powertrain is on the works. The window into the engine bay was covered, which seems to suggest that a new powertrain was being tested.
Another notable camouflage was on the front section. There were covered wires linked to the front wheel arches.
Analysts predict that there might be new electronic chassis systems being tested, possibly the traction and stability control systems.
In another report, the spotted mule is expected to be named 2019 Ferrari 588, as the successor of the 488 GTB. The mid-engine sports car is believed to be launched in the next two years.
The next-generation mid-engine sports car is speculated to run with the new 2.9-liter V6 engine. This new bi-turbo V6 engine can produce up to 600 bhp. In addition, the new model will most likely be a short-wheelbase model.
Furthermore, Ferrari is expected to release two variants of the new 488 GTB. This theory stems from what the automaker has done with the release of the new GTC4 Lusso where two engine options were offered, the V12 and V8 power.
The other engine option for the new 488 GTB is believed to be a V8 engine. This variant is expected to produce 680bhp.
Meanwhile, the report also mentioned that the upcoming 2019 Ferrari 588 might also come with a hybrid electric variant. If such is the case, this third variant will have an additional 150bhp.
Ferrari 488 GTB is still considered a young model as it was just launched last year. However, this mid-engine sport car was actually an upgrade of the 2010 Ferrari 458 Italia. It seems that it is already a good time to call for a refresh.
