A baby was found abandoned and crying in the sand at a Hawaii beach shortly after she was born according to a report by the Associated Press.
Human Services was able to confirm that the 8-pound newborn was "abandoned immediately after birth," according to Department Human Services Director Patricia McManaman.
A woman parked at Sandy Beach in east Honolulu sometime between 11 p.m. and midnight on April 28 heard "several people" yelling according to police spokeswoman Michelle Yu.
A few minutes later she stopped hearing the screaming and instead heard a baby crying. After walking towards the ocean, she saw the infant on the sand.
The unidentified woman took the baby to a nearby hospital. Police are investigating the case as "endangering the welfare of a minor and child abandonment" according to the Associated Press.
"We're just very grateful this child is alive and doing well," said McManaman, who confirmed the baby is doing well.
If no one comes forward to claim the child, the Department of Human Services will file a petition this week with family court, asking for custody. A
If no one claims the child or if the family doesn't come forward, the state will ask the court for permission to release a photo of the infant on Monday, according to McManaman.
Back in 2007, Hawaii became the 48th state with a baby safe haven law, said state Rep. John Mizuno. The law provides immunity from prosecution for leaving an unharmed newborn within 72 hours of birth at a fire department, police station or hospital or with emergency services.
