New McLaren 570S Spider Is On Its Way Later This Year

The new McLaren 570S is receiving another version, and it's called the McLaren 570S Spider. As per McLaren's head honcho, the supercar is anticipated to go official later this year.

Mike Flewitt, the automaker's chief, said that the 570S would be treated to a folding, hard-top roof, but at the same time said that a 540C Spider had been ruled out.

"With the 540C, by the time you add options, it can cost the same as a 570S, which is why we only offer it in certain markets," Mike Flewitt said. "And because of that, it doesn't make sense to do a 540C Spider. There will never be a 540 GT either." He added.

The new McLaren 570S Spider will be powered by the same 3.8-liter turbocharged V8 engine that is found in the 570S coupe. The engine produces 570 hp and 443 lb-ft of torque. As seen on the 650S Spider, the 570S Spider shouldn't see any weight penalty, either. The 650S Spider's folding hard-top adds an estimated 88 lb. to the overall weight.

In addition, the automaker has also proven track record of managing the same performance numbers from its sealed and open top versions. People can expect a 0-62 mph in just 3.2 seconds and a top speed of 205 mph, though the car won't be as fast with the top down. The 570S could weigh around 2,976 pounds.

When a specific automaker transforms a coupe into a convertible, everyone begins to worry about the added weight and reduced rigidity. But that will not be a problem for McLaren since its supercars are designed and built around a lightweight carbon fiber tub.

The 570S has a starting price at $188,000, and seeing before with the 650S and 650S Spider, the droptop and coupe saw a $20,000 difference in price. What that logic, expect the McLaren 570S Spider to have a price tag above $200,000. The 570S Spider will also debut later this year, most likely at Los Angeles Auto Shows in the fall or in the Frankfurt.
