Nintendo NES Classic Mini has been officially axed by the Japanese video game company. This highly sought-after retro gaming console is reported to be replaced by a mini version of the Super NES (SNES) Mini.
Eurogamer first reported that according to its sources, the SNES will have a scheduled launch this Christmas. In fact, the report furthered that development of this retro console in ongoing. This could be a considerable factor as to why Nintendo ceased worldwide production of its Nintendo NES Classic Mini console despite its massive success and high demand.
If the report turned out to be true, then its timing couldn't have been more convenient as last week, Nintendo of America announced that they have ended the shipments of the Nintendo NES Classic Mini console for "this year."
The Japanese video game company also explained that they never did intend for the NES Classic to be a permanent product, but rather a cool novelty item, just to bring back player's childhood memories, and it was perfect for the Christmas of 2016.
They also indicated that the manufacturing and shipping numbers of the NES Classic were just enough for their goal of making it a novelty item. "If production resumes in the future, an update will be posted on the official Nintendo website," Nintendo said.
If the Nintendo NES Classic Mini console was unique for being the company's first home console and it was able to bring Nintendo's name back on the map upon its release last year, its cousin the SNES Mini should reportedly have a better software lineup and could include more games, most likely around 50 compared with the NES Classic's 30.
Now, how valid and real is this report? Nintendo has declined to comment regarding the upcoming super retro console, as of this writing.
If Nintendo does intend to launch another super retro console, then hopefully, this time, they have enough stocks to meet consumer demand, so as to avoid the shortage that happened with the Nintendo NES Classic Mini console.
