2018 Mercedes-Benz S-Class Early Debut; Close To Being Autonomous?

The 2018 Mercedes-Benz S-Class has been teased prior to its grand debut at the 2017 Shanghai Auto Show. The German sedan boasts of its new design and latest technology features which bring it close to being an autonomous vehicle.

The new sedan gets a refresh on its front fascia. It now sports the V-12 model's grille and new headlights.

The back of the new S-Class has been revised too. The new sedan comes with new taillights and rear bumper.

With regard to the technology features, the new S-Class comes with Mercedes-Benz' latest Intelligent Drive suite of active safety and driver assistance tech. These new features allow the new sedan to perform similarly with autonomous driving.

The latest technology features include Active Steering Assist, Active Lane Change Assist, Active Speed Limit Assist, Active Distance Assist Distronic, Route-Based Speed Adaptation and Active Emergency Stop Assist. The Route-Based Speed Adaptation allows the car to anticipate speed reduction with reference to the data provided by the map for junctions, roundabouts, toll booths, bends and exit ramps.

Furthermore, the German automaker has also announced the other features of the new S-Class. The new sedan will have Active Brake Assist with Cross-Traffic function, Active Lane Keeping Assist, Car-to-X communication, Active Blind Spot Assist, Evasive Steering Assist, and Pre-Safe Plus.

Putting safety at its priority list, Mercedes-Benz has added two new safety features on the new sedan. The new S-Class will have the Pre-Safe Impulse Side and Pre-Safe Sound features which have been introduced on the E-Class model.

The Pre-Safe Impulse Side protects the passengers from greater side crash impact. This system automatically inflates the seat bolsters to move the passenger up to 2.75 inches away from the crash side, once the system detects an imminent side impact.

The Pre-Safe Sound helps avoid the possibility of hearing loss during a crash. This system helps omit an interference signal which may damage the ears of the passengers.

In terms of interiors, the 2018 Mercedes-Benz S-Class has three new upholstery options to choose from. A Silk Beige/Deep-Sea Blue, Magma Grey/Espresso Brown, and Mahogany/Silk Beige variant have been added to the lineup.
