Kia Australia may have inadvertently confirmed its intention to join the Virgin Australia Supercars Championship. CEO Damien Meredith said that the company is "open to the idea of racing," adding that they are currently in talks with Supercars Australia as well as different teams.

Later this year, Kia will release the highly-anticipated Stinger. The rear-wheel drive sedan is widely considered to be Kia's main attraction should it decide to join the Supercars Championship.

The Kia Stinger was unveiled at this year's Detroit Motor Show. The company claimed that the Stinger is "Designed in Frankfurt, developed on the Nurburgring." While some might consider this as hype, the Stinger has the numbers to back up its claim.

The fully loaded Stinger packs a 3.3-liter twin-turbocharged V6 engine which can churn 272kW of power and 510Nm of torque. This powerful engine can propel the Stinger from zero to 100km/h in just 4.9 seconds.

The new Gen2 Supercars regulations allow non-V8 powered cars to enter the competition in 2018. While that is still a year to go, this offers a perfect opportunity for Kia show its commitment towards motorsport. With the Stinger expected to hit the market in September, it is just a matter of time before the car will finally hit the track.

In a statement acquired by Cars Guide, Mr. Meredith said, "Kia's never gone racing in Australia before, and we have to substantiate what a program would deliver, but we'd probably go with one team."

Mr. Meredith has also hinted that Kia is already in talks with some motorsports team, something that backs up speculations about its impending entry into the sport. Nevertheless, the Kia Stinger will be a sight to behold on the track should Kia decide to race it.
