Chevrolet stated this week that they have a diesel version of their Cruze compact sedan that can achieve 46 mpg on the highway. This would mean the 2014 model would offer the best highway fuel economy of any non-hybrid passenger car in America.
"We harnessed generations of diesel expertise to adapt our world-class global engine for the North American market," said Gary Altman, chief engineer, Chevrolet Cruze Diesel according to the company press release. "The Cruze Diesel is the best diesel passenger car out there. Chevrolet is redefining the meaning of great fuel economy with this car."
In comparison, the Volkswagen Jetta TDI has a 42 mpg highway rating, which is lower than the new Chevy, but has a higher City rating, which is 30 mpg according to VW.
With a starting price of $25,695, including an $810 destination charge, the Cruze is a better value than the VW Jetta as well according to GM. The Cruze also offers a number of different standard features like the Chevrolet MyLink infotainment system, leather seats, and 17-inch alloy wheels.
It's not all good news for the new Chevy however, as the Cruze will have a City rating of just 27 mpg, giving it a combined rating of 33 mpg.
The Cruze is equipped with a six-speed automatic transmission, which has an estimated range of 700 highway miles on just one tank of gas based on EPA highway estimates and the new model's tank capacity.
Chevrolet has sold over 2 million Cruze models worldwide since the first model was released back in 2010.
The new model will be available in certain locations by the end of this spring and nationwide by fall 2013 according to a company press release.
