Surface Pro 5 Release Date: New Tablet Not Coming On Microsoft's May 2 Event

The Surface Pro 5 has been leaked just recently, hinting its imminent release date. Seemingly just in time, Microsoft announced an event on May 2. However, the tablet is not going to debut at that time.

Although the event is the perfect venue to announce the Surface Pro 5 or even the Surface Phone, some sources say that Microsoft is focusing on creativity and education instead. A new Windows software can be expected and an unknown hardware.

A more streamlined Windows 10 that is targeted at the education sector will likely be showcased alongside a new Surface device. The laptop will be a version of the Surface Book but without the removable screen feature. This would make for a more traditional clamshell design with a cheaper price tag.

So when is the Surface Pro 5 releasing? Reports indicate that Microsoft may introduce the Pro 4 successor later this year instead.

Once it is launched, its Intel Skylake processor will be upgraded to a Kaby Lake. But that's about it. The Surface Pro 5 will not change dramatically from its processors, though it is expected to use a USB Type-C port. But the Surface Connect power connector will remain unchanged.

The Surface Pro 5 will also naturally include the touchscreen stylus called the Surface Pen. It might come with a rechargeable battery and a dock, according to a patent spotted last year.

All these specs will account for a higher price. The Surface Pro 5, at its cheapest variant, will likely be priced $899. Consumers may also opt to upgrade the device to an Intel Core i7 for $100 more and to an i7 Extreme version for $700 more than the base price.

As more and more details surface about the tablet, an official announcement from Microsoft is bound to come soon. The Surface Pro 5 will undoubtedly be released this year, but an exact reveal date is yet to be uncovered.
