The Galaxy S8 and iPhone 7 are the latest and greatest smartphones from Samsung and Apple. The flagships are equipped with top of the line specs, incredible designs, and a price tag to match it. Usually, people compare the phones with software benchmarks, but one YouTuber decided to put the phones head-to-head in a new drop test.
As reported by Express, the new Samsung Galaxy S8 comes with a gorgeous dual-curved display that extends to the very edge of the chassis. The front and the back of the phone are protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 5. The Galaxy S8 comes with a 5.8-inch Quad HD+ display that delivers an impressive 570 pixels per inch. The Galaxy S8+ comes with a larger 6.2-inch screen.
In comparison, the iPhone 7 comes with either a 4.7-inch of 5.5-inch displays that still has thick bands around it, while the Galaxy S8 has almost eradicated the bezels around its display. On first glance, the larger bezels and metal case design makes the iPhone appear more resistant to drops than the all-glass, edge-to-edge design of the Samsung Galaxy S8.
However, a recent YouTube video shows otherwise. The guy behind the YouTube Account EverythingApplePro managed to get his hands on a Galaxy S8 ahead of the UK Release date. He put the phone through a number of torturous tests. In the drop test, the Galaxy S8’s back which is encased with Gorilla Glass 5 shatters almost instantly, while the aluminum back of the iPhone7 holds up much better.
However, despite having no bezels, the front screen of the Galaxy S8 managed to withstand the vast majority of the drops and continued to work flawlessly throughout the tests. The screen on the iPhone 7 started to flicker and stutter as it came away from the body of the phone. Even though it is hard to see how representative these drop tests are compared to the smartphone owners’ real-world experiences, both smartphone should be able to withstand a few accidental drops before you have to do a display repair.
According to Forbes, Samsung has rushed the Galaxy S8 despite its design flaw. The only let down in Samsung’s design is the misplacement of the fingerprint scanner that was moved to the back of the device. It is in an incredibly awkward and unnatural position.
In order to reach the fingerprint scanner, you would have to hold the device with both hands and sometimes requiring you to turn the smartphone around to make sure you’ve hit the fingerprint scanner and not the heartbeat sensor. In addition, the fingerprint scanner is located close to the camera and it’s almost impossible not to touch the camera lens every time you want to unlock the phone. Samsung admitted the design flaw and decide to display a warning message to remind users to regularly clean the camera lens.
