Why You Should Watch New Netflix Series '13 Reasons Why'

13 Reasons Why is a TV series that follows Jay Asher’s best-selling young adult novel about a teen suicide. The series isn’t your average teen drama, in fact, it covers a number of heavy topics that many teenagers are facing today.

As reported by Mind Body Green, 13 Reasons Why is a 13-episode drama series that released in its entirety on March 13. The drama focuses on the fact that 17 percent of high school students have seriously considered suicide, and 8 percent have mad an attempt in the previous 12 months. In order to raise awareness about suicide prevention, here are some of the reasons why you should watch “13 Reasons Why”.

With the teens being on their phones all the time and cyberbullying being serious, the show focuses exactly on how hurtful it can be. According to a 2016 Study, 34 percent of teens have been bullied online. And as the main character Hannah says, the internet makes everything worse. Sexual assault among teens is common and usually not reported. There are plenty of sexual events in the show that occur all too frequently in real life as well. The show also shows underage teens buying alcohol and drugs, and substance abuse among teen is rampant in real life as well.

There are the parents too. They often fail to communicate effectively with their teens. In order to not invade their teens’ privacy, they often stray away from asking about the problems their kids are facing. Last but not least, schools have to do more as well. As shown in the series, the teachers and guidance counselors are ineffective and unable to gain teens’ confidence.

On the other hand, Pop Sugar gives some insight on why the parents should watch the show together with their kids. First of all, the show opens the door for some heavy conversations. Even if the kid is not ready to talk about suicide, sexual assault, depression, and substance abuse, the show is a great way to build up an open communication and education about these important topics. With each series becoming more and more intense, the kids would most likely be encouraged to talk openly about their feelings. The sexual assaults shown in the show are an important topic that the parents should discuss with their kids.

And last but not least, Hannah’s suicide is shown in the series, which could raise awareness for suicide prevention for both the parent and the kid. Bullying, sexual assault, and teen suicide are tragic realities that happen every day. This show portrays the truth of being a teen and it encourages the parents to watch it as well.
