New Overwatch Comic Shines A Light On New Lore

With the latest Overwatch comic, the lore of the game deepens. “Uprising” is set seven years in the past where King’s Row is seized by an extremist faction, where the story sets some of the original members for one of their most difficult fights.

As reported by PC Gamer, the comic shows the conflict between omnics and humans. The extremist faction of robots known as Null Sector have seized King’s Row, and the Overwatch team can’t do anything about it as the British government forbade them. Strike Commander Jack Morrison, or most commonly known as Soldier:76, needs to decide whether to disobey orders or stand by while thousands of lives are in peril.

He has one more big decision to make as well. He needs to decide whether to authorize the new Overwatch recruit Lena Oxton for active duty. Oxton is actually the hero Tracer. The comic gives a glimpse of her training with Genji, as well as urge Soldier:76 to send Overwatch into King’s Row.

As told by Polygon, the story of Overwatch has always involved a battle between humans and robots. In this comic, Blizzard provides a rare look at the characters’ history and adds some new color to the fight. The comic is released just a few days after a recent tease by the Overwatch Twitter account. They teased a special mission that would be declassified sometime on April 11. The mission would have something to do with the seven-year-old King’s Row uprising, which directly links the comic to that event.

Overwatch’s game director Jeff Kaplan said that the event on April 11 will have huge narrative implications for Overwatch. He said that with further lore releases, the players will know more about the story of Overwatch, about its past, and about the fight with omnics and humans. On top of that, he reported that “Uprising” is among the best comics the team has ever done.
