Teen Hit By Softball Dies During Gym Class On His Birthday (VIDEO)

A California high school student died on April 11 after being hit in the chest with a softball during gym class according to local police.

Taylor Dorman, a 10 th grader, was playing "Over the Line," an improvised softball game when he was hit by a ball according to Ramona High School Principal Tony Newman.

"After being hit Taylor complained of his chest hurting then he collapsed," said Newman according to UPI.com.

Dorman continued playing the game for about 20 minutes, even joked with the kid who hit him by accident before collapsing to the ground according to KFMB-TV.

The boy was then airlifted to Palomar Hospital where he died just a few hours later. The official cause of death has yet to be released as of press time.

After doctors examined the Dorman family's medical history, they reported that his father died of a heart attack when Dorman was just a little boy.

Newman and police officials confirmed that the incident took place the same day Dorman turned 16.

Students gathered Wednesday night to mourn the loss of their classmate, who played on the football team and signed a memorial poster for Dorman.

"He was always happy and always smiling," one classmate told the station. "And even when it was a bad day he would always bring just so much happiness."

This is the second time in under a year that a high school student has died during gym class. Just last May, an 18-year-old Anthony Vaeao died at Mission Hills High School in San Marcos after collapsing in the school gym according to NBC.

Vaeao was playing basketball with friends at the time when he fell to the ground and was taken to a local hospital. He was pronounced dead just hours later. Doctors confirmed that Vaeao suffered from a previously unknown heart problem.
