Toyota Claims Corolla Beat Out Ford Focus For World’s Best-Selling Car In 2012

Toyota Motor Corp. said today, April 10, that its Corolla vehicle was the world's top selling car in 2012, not their rival's Ford Focus which claimed the top spot less than 24 hours ago according to a report by Reuters.

Sales for the Ford Focus vehicle reached 1.02 million last year according to data released by R.L. Polk on April 9. Coming in a No. 2 was the Toyota Corolla at 872,774, which Toyota is now disputing.

Toyota spokesman Ryo Sakai said the car company sold 1.16 million Corollas in 2012, which would mean the Polk report was way off.

"Toyota still sees the Corolla as the world's most popular car," said Sakai in a company press release.

The number Toyota released doesn't include Corolla based models like the Auris, Auris Hybrid, Verso, E'z, Matrix, Scion xB and Rukus as well so it's unknown why the company's number and Polk's number are so far off.

If Polk is right, this would represent the second consecutive year in a row that the Focus outsold the Toyota Corolla.

"Focus and Fiesta represent the culmination of our One Ford global product strategy," said Jim Farley, Ford executive vice president, global marketing, sales and service and Lincoln yesterday about the news. "Our global products are resonating with consumers, especially in the best-selling, most competitive segments , with their unique combination of fuel efficiency, high quality, rich content and fun-to-drive personalities."

Polk has yet to comment about Toyota's claim as of press time.

"The sales figure includes Corolla Sedan, which is over 90 percent of the total volume, and the Corolla Altis, Corolla Axio, Corolla Wagon, Corolla Fielder and Corolla Rumion," said Sakai in a press statement.
