A man was struck and killed by a car while trying to help an injured rabbit on a two-lane highway west of Laramine, Wyoming according to a highway patrol officer.

The officer claims that 79-year-old William Kieren died on April 7 at a hospital in Fort Collins, Colorado.

The incident took place at 9 p.m. on April 7 on Wyoming 230, approximately six miles west of Laramine.

The rabbit was still alive on the roadway by the time police arrived, but was put down by a trooper.

Kieren was traveling in his own vehicle on the highway when he saw the rabbit on the road. He then reportedly decided to try helping the injured animal, stopped his vehicle on the highway, and walked towards the rabbit.

While he was either on or near the center of the road of the highway, he was hit by a vehicle going the speed limit.

Samantha Brown, 25, told police that she saw Kieren's vehicle stopped along the road and she tried to pass it via the other lane. However, she did not see Kieren standing in the road and hit him, according to the Laramie Boomerang newspaper.

Medical specialists arrived to the scene where they pronounced Kieren dead on the spot according to the Associated Press.

Police couldn't confirm what the man was going to do with the animal after moving it, but if the trooper felt the need to put the animal down there is a good chance it wouldn't have survived for much longer.
