With the influx of electric cars, Hyundai and Kia are doing everything they can to make an electric car that is worthy of its competitors. They are planning to make electric cars out of the existing cars that they have.
The unnamed Kia car will somehow have similar features to Tesla cars. Similar to the well-known electric car brand, the car's engine will be placed on the floor of its car to accommodate more battery capacity.
Hyundai and Kia designed this to keep the center of gravity low inside the car. With this design, there will also be more cabin inside the car.
The creation of this electric car is reportedly a risky move for the company. Hyundai-Kia's Head Lee Ki-Sang noted that the electric-vehicle platform requires high up-front investment, which might be a problem if the company decided to launch in China.
If the company decided to release an electric car in the Chinese market, it will have to find a Chinese battery supplier. The Chinese government is actively pushing eco-friendly cars in the country.
Hyundai and Kia will be faced with a lot of battery restrictions in the country, making it hard for them to release the cars in China. On a side note, there have been no reports if the sister companies will produce in the Asian country.
Despite this, the company is still keen on providing its consumers with electric cars. Hyundai and Kia believe that they need to create eco-friendly cars to be able to compete with their competitors.
The electric car will be available in compact and subcompact models. It has a range of 186 miles that is more competitive than its rivals.
Hyundai and Kia's electric car is rumored to be an SUV since this type of car is in demand in the market today. It could be remembered that Kia Niro SUV is selling more than Hyundai Ioniq to date.
Aside from SUV cars, there are also rumors that Hyundai and Kia will be transforming their Genesis cars to electric cars. The fully electric car will reportedly be introduced in 2019, with a plug-in hybrid also debuting that year.
