A U.S. Secret Service agent almost shot Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad during a UN assembly in New York back in 2006 according to a new book.
"A US Secret Service agent, in an apparent accident, discharged his shotgun as Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was loading his motorcade at the InterContinental Hotel yesterday," said a memo sent as part of Bush's daily intelligence briefing according to the Telegraph.
The agent claimed he was just adjusting his gun that was mounted to his side as Ahmadinejad was being escorted into a nearby vehicle.
Ahmadinejad heard the shot, and turned to look in the direction of the agent, but didn't pursue the matter and just got into his car without saying a word according to Global Post.
Iran has never said anything about the incident.
The agent reportedly was adjusting his gun placed on the side of a vehicle when the weapon accidentally was fired. The bullet then shot towards Ahmadinejad, just barely missing him according to Marc Ambinder and D.B. Grady in the book "Deep State: Inside the Government Secrecy Industry."
"Everyone just stopped" said an official who was quoted in the book, "The Iranians looked at us. We looked at the Iranians. The agent began to apologize. Ahmadinejad just turned his head and got into the car".
Back in 2006, Iran was under intense "scrutiny" as a report, released just a few days before the shooting, stated the country had not stopped "uranium-enrichment related activities" according to The Telegraph.
Bush originally feared that Ahmadinejad would take the accidental shooting as an assassination attempt, causing a public relations nightmare, but it was never even revealed to the press.
Other reports claim that Ahmadinejad was not as close as the new book states when the gun accidentally went off.
"The Secret Service didn't almost shoot Ahmadinejad, but an agent accidentally discharged a shotgun in his proximity," said Reuters reporter Anthony De Rosa according to the Inquisitr.
