Volvo V60 Plug-in Hybrid To Make American Debut At New York Auto Show, One Of Three Candidates For World Green Car Of The Year (VIDEO)

The Volvo V60 Plug-in Hybrid will make its American debut next week at the New York International Auto Show according to a company press release.

The V60 is the first diesel plug-in hybrid ever and was selected as one of the three finalists for the World Green Car of the Year award, which will be presented at the auto show. The vehicle was selected by 66 automotive journalists from 23 different countries around the world.

"The ingenious on-demand possibility makes the V60 Plug-in Hybrid superior to all other hybrids on the market," said Doug Speck, Senior Vice President, Marketing, Sales and Customer Service at Volvo Car Group in the company press release. "Thanks to the Pure, Hybrid and Power modes, the car is the perfect choice for the uncompromising customer who wants to minimize his or her carbon dioxide emissions but maximize driving pleasure."

The new model includes two complete drive trains and a more powerful battery according to Volvo. Drivers can also choose a preferred driving mode through three button options: Pure, Hybrid, and Power.

The Pure button allows a driver to go 31 miles on pure electric power, whereas the Hybrid mode the carbon dioxide emissions are 48 g/km. This means a fuel consumption of only 1.8 l/ 100 km, equaling 130 mpg according to Volvo.

The Power mode helps the vehicle go faster, and the company estimates the V60 can go 0 to 62 in 6.1 seconds. In Power mode, the car can reach its top speed of 143 mph, and in electric-only mode, its top speed is 78 mph.

"Over 50 per cent of the Plug-in Hybrid buyers are conquests from competitor brands. The access to two drive trains and three driving modes makes it the perfect choice for consumers who want green motoring without compromises," said Speck in the press release. "The success of the plug-in hybrid is probably the most powerful signal of the revitalization of the Volvo brand since we began our independent journey in 2010."

The Volvo press conference is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. on Mar. 28, which will also include the world premiere of the company's newest R-Design models and the announcement of a new North American Volvo according to the press release.
