Earlier this week, Ford Motor Company announced cool new features for the 2018 Ford Mustang and the 2018 Ford F150. Both vehicles will have a new Nighttime Pedestrian Detection System.
The Nighttime Pedestrian Detection system can apply the brakes in an event of an imminent collision with a person on foot. This new feature could potentially save lives.
It also reduces a driver's stress while driving at night, according to Ford. The company also offered more details on how the system will work.
The new Ford Pedestrian Detection system will be launched in the United States along with the release of the 2018 Ford Mustang and 2018 Ford F150. As for those living in Europe, this all-new system will be introduced when the 2018 Ford Fiesta is released.
According to Ford, the system works by collecting information from the radar sensors in the front end of the new Ford vehicle. A camera mounted in the rear view mirror assembly is also part of the process.
So, as each of these models (2018 Ford Mustang or F150) drives down on a dark road, the system automatically uses the radar and the camera to scan the area in front of the vehicle. It is an amazing technology as the camera takes 30 images per second in an effort to identify pedestrian-shaped objects.
The radar system, on the other hand, scans the motion of those objects while the camera take images. Now, should the system detect a pedestrian headed into the path of the vehicle in question, the driver will immediately be alerted with a chime and a flashing icon on the dash.
If the driver does not react to the automatic alert and a collision with a pedestrian is imminent, then the Ford Pedestrian Detection system automatically apply the brakes. The system will also work when it is light out, but the nighttime aspect of the feature will play a greater role in making the 2018 Ford Mustang and 2018 Ford F150 safer for everyone - even to those not inside the vehicle.
Just imagine how many lives this feature can save. As for the price and availability of both models, the details are expected to be released closer to their on-sale dates later in the year.
