GM Recall For Faulty Brake Lights Could Reach Over 1 Million Cars, Would Include Chevrolet Malibu, Saturn Aura

General Motors may be forced to recall over a million midsize vehicles after an investigation into brake light issues according to the Associated Press.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration stated that they're investigating whether to add the GM vehicles to a previous recall for brake light problems after receiving almost a 100 complaints.

The complains received were about the 2004 through 2011 Chevrolet Malibu and the 2007 to 2009 Saturn Aura vehicles according to the Associated Press.

Back in 2009, GM recalled approximately 8,000 Pontiac G6 midsize vehicles released in the 2005 model year. The NHTSA stated in February however that they re-opened the investigation to determine whether or not they should add 550,000 G6 models sold between 2005 through 2009.

The issue approximately 97 people have complained about is that brake lights haven't been coming on when the proper pedal is pressed, or the lights come on without the driver pressing the pedal.

If the lights don't come on, cars driving behind the vehicles won't be warned if the vehicle is coming to a stop, which could lead to a crash according to the Associated Press.

Some of the complaints have also stated that the cruise control may not engage or will turn on automatically at times, which is also a reason for concern according to the NHTSA.

The Detroit based company sold over 1.5 million Malibu and Aura models from 2004 through 2011 according to a report by Ward's AutoInfoBank. The company wasn't able to confirm how many of those vehicles have been investigated however.

Owners who think their vehicle has brake light or cruise control problems should take their cars to any Chevrolet, GMC, Cadillac or Buick dealer. GM decided to shut down the Pontiac and Saturn brands in 2010 as part of a massive company restructuring according to The Huffington Post.

No injuries or crashes have been reported as of press time.
