Nissan started testing self-driving versions of its popular all-electric Nissan Leaf in London recently, but no detailed information was given on the matter at that time. The new leaf was able to deal with the city's traffic at speed up to 50 mph.
The coverage reveals that the self-driving Nissan LEAFS seems to have a total of 12 cameras, four lasers (presumably LiDar), and five radars. All are integrated and processed by a large set up that currently fills much of the trunk.
Senior Vice President, Research, and Advanced Engineering at Nissan, Takao Asami, said: "Innovation and ingenuity are at the heart of the Nissan brand and its people. This test of Nissan's forthcoming autonomous drive technology in the demanding conditions of London streets underlines our commitment to delivering Nissan Intelligent Mobility to our customers."
Similar demonstrations are now anticipated in other countries such as France and Netherlands. In fact, in Japan, ProPILOT technology is now offered in the Nissan Serena.
Nissan is currently aiming to have its self-driving tech finished in time for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, where a successful showcase of the technology will serve as a strong statement and good PR for the automaker. Nissan automaker explained that a multi-lane autonomous driving technology will allow automatic lane changes on highways and planned for an introduction next year. Autonomous driving on urban roads is scheduled for launch in 2020.
Meanwhile, Nissan's Silicon Valley lab is now working on what is calls Seamless Autonomous Mobility. The world today is facing challenges such as climate change, road facilities, traffic congestion, and increasing air pollution. With this, Nissan is committed to facing these challenges by making transportation smarter, safer, and more enjoyable, with the goal of achieving zero emissions and zero fatalities on the road.
Furthermore, Nissan already announced that ProPILOT autonomous drive technology would be rolled out later this year in the new Nissan Leaf and also in the Qashqai. It will also be rolled out to 8 more models over the next three years.
