2017 Honda Clarity Fuel Cell Sedan Is So Clean That Anyone Can Drink From It

Customers who are looking for a car that looks cool and futuristic, the 2017 Honda Clarity Fuel Cell is worth considering. The car can refuel much faster that any other electric vehicle can recharge, and it offers more range, too.

The 2017 Honda Clarity Fuel Cell sedan arrived in late 2016, and it's the most advanced vehicle that Honda has ever made. The car is the latest in a series of fuel cell vehicles from Honda, the last of which was the limited-market, lease-only FCX Clarity. Unlike its predecessors, the new Clarity will be available for sale to the general public, making a milestone in the automaker's fuel cell program.

Even though the new Clarity is about the same size as the Honda Accord, it is hardly a typical midsize sedan. Rather than being replaced by a fuel nozzle or an electrical cord, the vehicle accepts only compressed hydrogen. The onboard fuel cell converts the hydrogen to electricity via oxygen from the air. That means that the car will operate as an EV as the electricity is then distributed to the electric motors that power the wheels.

On the inside, the lounge-inspired cabin comes standard with an 8-inch touchscreen that controls navigation, audio, and other functions. Unique touchscreen features come with an energy-use monitor and a hydrogen station locator. The car also supports both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

When it comes to performance, the front-wheel-drive car produces 174 hp and 221 lb-ft of torque from its fuel cell powertrain. The car weighs at approximately 4,200 pounds, so don't expect it to be fast. However, unlike most EVs, it will be perky since it generates its maximum torque as soon as the driver steps on the throttle pedal.

The 2017 Honda Clarity Fuel Cell has a lithium-ion battery that's located on the floor to give a buffer for the fuel cell stack, which lies under the hood as a unit with the electric motor and ancillary equipment. Its two tanks store hydrogen at 10,000 psi, the larger one sits behind the back seat. It also comes with safety features such as forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking, lane keeping assist, lane departure warning and road departure mitigation.
