Tesla Model X Production Pushed Back to Late 2014 For ‘Production and Product Enhancements’

Tesla Motors has announced that production for the all-wheel-drive Model X electric crossover will start in late 2014, over a year later than the company originally stated according to The New York Times.

The revised production date was discussed in the company's Form 10-K filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission last week.

Tesla first announced back in Feb. 2012 that production would begin no later than the end of 2013, and vehicles would be shipped out to dealerships by early 2014. Now just a year after the announcement Elon Musk, Tesla's CEO, said at the Detroit Auto Show last month that the time frame had shifted a bit.

Production for the Model X will now start during the second half of 2014 and models will be delivered to dealerships before the end of next year according to Reuters.

"I almost have trouble calling this a delay in Model X, because that makes it sound like we've run into problems with Model X, and it's taking longer than we thought, and it's out of our control," Shanna Hendricks, a Tesla spokeswoman, said to The New York Times. "When, really, we're consciously pushing back timing to allow ourselves to focus on its production and product enhancements in Model S."

Tesla did experience production issues and problems with their first car, the Roadster, but the sedans were actually released to dealerships earlier than expected.

The Model X will be built on the same platform as the Model S sedan according to a company press statement. The Model X will require a down payment of $5,000 but an official price has yet to be listed according to Wired.

Tesla expects to sell 10,000 to 15,000 vehicles once the Model X is released. The company's official website says "deliveries begin 2014" which seems to indicate they're positive they'll be able to release the car before 2015.

"This unique vehicle has been designed to fill the niche between the roominess of a minivan and the style of an S.U.V., while having high-performance features such as a dual-motor all-wheel-drive system," Tesla's 10-K document stated about the new vehicle.
